Ch-ch-changes

Friends.

Friends, friends, friends.

Sorry it’s been six months since I posted on this blog! Pretty much the second half of 2014 was a whirlwind of library renovations, rebooting programming, getting a new job (!!), and the ever crazy holiday season.

When I started this blog, I was a newly-minted children’s librarian trying to figure out what a good storytime plan looked like and how to integrate ECRR into my programming, working in a huge urban system. Today, I’m a youth services librarian doing programming for school aged kids, tweens, and teens in a small city with one and a half library outlets. I’m doing less fingerplays and more long-term planning.

And it’s really, really hard. Transitioning from teens to early childhood and back to teens is definitely difficult. I spent two years immersing myself in picture books and chapter books, and I feel like I missed SO MUCH great YA. Figuring out how purchasing works is a logistical challenge, but also involves all kinds of things I never thought of before. At my old library, everything floated and purchasing was centralized. My main job was maintaining the collection by weeding based on condition and use, and transferring books between libraries to meet needs. Now, I have to think about the budget, space constraints, having a balanced collection, and making sure diversity is represented in ALL the ways. It’s super fun, but kind of exhausting.

There are other changes, too. Mostly what this all means is I won’t be posting toddler time plans any more! I do love posting programming recaps though, because it’s such a great way of de-briefing myself and figuring out what worked and didn’t. I’m pumped that we’ll be getting some solid school-aged programming off the ground soon, and I’m hoping to post some stuff that will help Thrive Thursday rock! I also know good stuff is going to come from Teen Services Underground, and I’m excited to watch my peers knock it out of the park.

So that’s what happened. And continues to happen! I’ll be back – I’ve got long desk shifts prime for blog writing!
